This is a registered airport -- Two (2) 18/36 (North-South) Turf runways. The East runway is shorter and gets less traffic. Plus, if the crops are mowed, the area between the runways is a good place for PPGs (watch for traffic obviously). Cushing tends to be fairly quiet early in the morning. The vibe at Cushing is very Ultralight and Light Sport Plane friendly. A couple of our trikers also fly PPGs. Come on down! Cushing's a party on nice weekends. Everybody is welcome.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: from, say, Yorkville simply drive south on 47 until you get to 71 (the McDonalds and big Shell station) then turn west toward Newark which is about 9 miles. Drive thru Newhark (basically a BP Station/Subway--note the cafe beside the station is pretty good, cheap and frequented by Cushing pilots) for another mile or so and you will see a barn with a red roof with Cushing on it. Turn left into the airfield. We have self-serve pumps with 94 oct mogas at a reasonable rate.

URGENT UPDATE (9/12/09): The landowner, Harry, has mandated: "Due to neighborhood complaints, Harryport is now closed to open flying.". FLYING IS NO LONGER OPEN TO THE GENERAL PPG PILOT POPULATION! DO NOT FLY HERE! Will post more details as events/situation changes.

This is a private field -- requiring permission from the Landowner (contact Harry Rossett) and completion of a Waiver before launching/landing. But, this is a one-of-a-kind "gem" of any airfield -- you just have to see this "playground" for adults and kids alike. Featuring a large circular field permitting 360-degree launches/landings and a long Northeast-Southwest turf runway for fixed wing operations. There is also a small "waterpark" feature a swimming hold, slides, boats, docks and fishing. And the main "hanger" structure is a "must-see" with a old-style street setting, apartments, game room, bar and a lifesize replice of Stonehenge were cozy fires can be enjoyed after flying. But the neighbors haven't been too happy about all the aircraft -- so be curteous to them and fly away from their homes as best you can.

ADDRESS:
Sugar Grove, IL

GPS COORDINATES:
N41°50.430
W088°24.760

This is a private field -- requiring completion of a Waiver before launching/landing (contact Gary Brown). The airfield is quite literally a large, well-groomed, Polo Field allowing for 360-degrees of launching/landing directions and long foot-drags. This is probably my favorite private ultralight airfield.

RULES:
  • Download the waiver, print, sign and get it to Gary Brown (mailing address is on the form).
  • Do *NOT* drive your vehicle along the sides of the field -- the owner has stated this is damaging the field. Park only in the parking area at the South end of the field and walk your equipment out onto the field.
  • Please do not fly near the neighboring homes (especially the one to the Southeast as they have called the Police previously) and the golf course to the Southwest (they politely requested we avoid their area). Also, please be alert of the Aurora Airport Clasd D Airspace and traffic towards the South (look at an Aeronautical Sectional Chart if you're not familiar with this area).

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Get to Randall Road (I think you can exit I-88 there). Take Randall North to Main. Turn West on Main and south on Bliss -- there is a house/farm on the west (right hand side) near the corner. About ¼ mile down on the West side -- near the end of the corn field and right before a highwire/phone pole -- is the entrance to the polo field.

This is a private field -- requiring permission from the Landowner (contact Nick Scholtes) and completion of a Waiver before launching/landing. The airfield is oriented North-South with trees and structures immediately to the West (which can make launching/laning with Westerly winds a little challenging).

TIP: When flying these locations -- or any other locations that you may discover -- in the abscense of an official waiver from the landowner, it is recommended that you print, sign and give the following brochure to the landowner: USPPA Landowner Brochure. It explains the sport and releases them from liability. It's the right thing to do to protect the gracious landowner and keeps our sport respectable. It's just the right thing to do! Safe and happy flying!
