What does a Judo Instructor do?
Judo, translated from the original Japanese as the “gentle way,” is a martial art developed at the end of the 19th century and was created as a physical, mental and moral pedagogy. Practitioners throw, takedown or submit to opponents using strikes, pins, joint locks, and chokes, primarily showing its close relationship with Jujutsu.
A Judo instructor will teach the martial art itself but may also be required to take care of administrative or business aspects of the job. In the teaching of the discipline itself, physical fitness is a necessity as the instructor will demonstrate the techniques and observe the student in his or her practice and show the student what adjustments to make to hone their skills.
Students work their way through different levels of the discipline signified by a colored belts system. Tests are scheduled when technical thresholds are met, and goals are set for students to achieve and to keep motivated. Competitions may also be used to motivate and mark stages of progression. It is the job of the instructor to design the lessons, organize the testing and competitions, handle the logistics involved in traveling to competitions, organize the distribution of uniforms, and other aspects of the business.

The US Bureau of Labor reports that employment for all fitness instructors is likely to increase by 13% from 2018 through to 2028 as health and weight loss remain high priorities to the American public.
